Why strengthen marriages and families?

Did you know?

  • One in three babies in Ohio is born outside of marriage. They are more likely to be poor and disadvantaged.
  • Rate of divorce remains flat, but break-up rate of co-habitating relationships is higher.
  • Despite low marriage and high divorce rates, the majority of young adults want to marry.
  • The percentage of African-American children growing up in 2 parent households was 95% in 1940. Today it is less than 35%.

When parents get married and stay married, children win. Research shows that children from two-parent families get a better start in life. But every parent knows that marriage isn't always easy.

Luckily, there's a community of support nearby. Funded by the Ohio Strengthening Families Initiative, Southwest Ohio Building Strong Families and Children is a coalition of 13 community agencies in the Greater Cincinnati area, led by Beech Acres Parenting Center. Member agencies provide parents with positive, practical tools to build stronger families and give our children a great start in life.

Rekindle....Renew...Revive! Marriage Retreat
When the retreat ends, it will feel like you are returning from some exotic place. The goal is for couples to come away with a renewed affection for each other, and a clear vision of their relationship with each other
Date: March 16-17, 2007
Time: Friday, 7-10 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-7p.m.
Location: Sheraton Cincinnati North, 11320 Chester Rd, Springdale, OH 45246
Workshop registration:  $50/per couple. All meals and workshop materials included in registration fee. Meals included are snacks and dinner Friday, and breakfast, lunch and dinner Saturday.
Facilitators: Carlos and Katherine Greene of CK Committee, Craig and Donita Jackson
Room cost: Rate for one room (queen or king bed) is $69/night plus tax (must call hotel at 513.771.2080 to secure accommodations; event name is S.O.A.R. Marriage Retreat). Reservations must be made by March 1, 2007. Credit card is required to hold the room. Participants are strongly encouraged to stay overnight.
