For the Love of Kids® 2007 Practical Parenting Conference

Dr. Robin Arthur and Doug Arthur

WORKSHOP TITLE: Your Tween’s Enemy In The Mirror: Helping your tween win the battle of self-esteem

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW: This session offers a focused look at the world of your tween as seen by your tween, and the challenges he or she faces every day maintaining a positive self-esteem in a highly judgmental, often quite dysfunctional social network. Techniques and perspectives are offered to help you help your tween cultivate a positive self-esteem, and how you as a parent can get out of the way without letting go. Topics include helping your tween work around and through resentment, how to navigate the change from a parent-centric to a peer-centric universe, and how to help your tween deal with the everyday pressures around body image, media hype, sexuality, drug and alcohol usage, and other relevant traps.

Dr. Robin Thompson Arthur is a clinical psychologist, recently named Director of Psychology for the Lindner Center of HOPE, the newest world-class mental health hospital, scheduled to open in Mason, Ohio, in July 2008. Dr. Arthur has a private practice in Cincinnati, helping pre-teens, teens, and parents, as well as families and adults. She has worked extensively with youth, parents, and families as Clinical Supervisor for the North Star facility of Talbert House; while on staff at Beech Acres; and while working in the Cincinnati schools, St. Joseph's Orphanage, and Children's Hospital. She is presently adjunct faculty in the Psychiatry Department of University of Cincinnati and the Psychology Department at Xavier University.

Doug Arthur is a former award-winning middle-school teacher and previously Executive Director of TweenPlace, a non-profit providing leadership development programming for pre-teens and adolescent youth. Now affiliated with Atos Origin, a global IT services company, Mr. Arthur serves as their representative on the Youth Council and Youth Advisory Committee of the Southwest Ohio Region Workforce Investment Board. He is also Executive Director of the INTERalliance of Greater Cincinnati, a collaboration of businesses and educators working together to give our best and brightest young technology talent a compelling reason to stay in Cincinnati for college and their careers.

Robin and Doug Arthur add to their background the most important parent training ground of all: the parenting of their four children, ages 20, 18, 13, and 11.
